Endowed Scholarships

Endowed Scholarships

A number of Antonians have taken the initiative to raise funds for scholarships. At present only 21% of the College’s students are fully funded, so endowed scholarships provide critical funding far into the future and will ensure that the College is able to attract students of the highest calibre, enabling them to fulfil their potential without being distracted, or even deterred, by financial concerns.

The Archie Brown and Alex Pravda Scholarship

A small group of Archie’s and Alex’s friends and former students have the wish to honour two distinguished Emeritus Fellows for their achievements and to show gratitude for what they have done for the Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre as well as the College. The aim is to create a permanent scholarship for students who seek a deep understanding of the countries of the former Soviet Union and ex-communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

Oxford Sir John Swire and Professor Rosemary Foot Graduate Scholarship

In 2014 Bing Song (MLitt International Relations 1988) and Dr Wang Hao (DPhil International Relations 1988) got together with Professor Roger Goodman (DPhil Social Anthropology 1982) and they discussed the best way to honour Professor Rosemary Foot for her scholarly work in the International Relations of East Asia and to thank her for all she has done for St Antony’s College.

In agreement with the Swire Educational Trust and all donors towards the Rosemary Foot Scholarship, St Antony’s College and University of Oxford are delighted to be able to combine the two schemes so that a full scholarship can be offered.

Thanks to the generosity of all those who have donated to the Rosemary Foot Scholarship and the magnificent gift by the Swire Educational Trust, the College has been able to receive matched funding through Oxford’s Graduate Scholarship Matched Funding Scheme through which the Oxford Sir John Swire and Professor Rosemary Foot Graduate Scholarship can now be offered in perpetuity.

The Oxford Sir John Swire and Professor Rosemary Foot Graduate Scholarship is offered to applicants who are ordinarily resident in one of the following countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam, and who are applying for any full -time DPhil course within the range admitted by St Antony’s College.

The scholarship – starting in 2016/17 – covers course fees, College fees, and a grant for living costs. Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course. The next application round for the scholarship will commence in Michaelmas Term 2018

“It is great that the Swire Educational Trust and a group of Antonians joined hands. Wang Hao and I were the first batch of China Swire scholars to Oxford. I am grateful to Swire, Oxford and St Antony's which have shaped and changed my life. I am so glad that we are able to join hands after more than twenty years to make meaningful contributions to Oxford and St Antony's.” - Bing Song (MLitt International Relations).

It is still possible to contribute to the Rosemary Foot Scholarship Fund – these gifts will be added to the endowment and the extra income will be used for travel and research grants for students from East and South East Asia.
