Hourani Scholarship Fund

The Albert Hourani Scholarship supports outstanding doctoral students studying the modern Middle East at Oxford.

Created through the generosity of Antonians at the time of the celebrations to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Middle East Centre in 2007 and to honour the founder of the Centre, the Scholarship is awarded to students on the basis of academic excellence, financial need and the importance of their research.

Funds raised have already supported two doctoral students in their studies.

Farid Boussaid was awarded the Hourani Scholarship for the academic year 2007-08 and received £5,000 to assist his research on business elites in Morocco and their role in political change.

The recipient of the Scholarship for the academic year 2008-09 was Hatsuki Aishima who similarly received £5,000 for her work on the legacy of the Egyptian intellectual `Abd al-Halim Mahmud.

To enable the Scholarship to continue, the Centre aims this year to raise £10,000 to build the Scholarship Fund and allow an award of £7,500 to be made to a student for the next academic year.  Any contribution to the Scholarship Fund would help achieve this target and ensure that excellent students with limited resources are able to complete their studies.

Giving has never been easier - there are several ways you can do this:

  • online on the University's online giving site. [US donors may use Americans for Oxford Inc]. As this is a University facility, we are unable to list all the funds we manage at St Antony's. However, please send an email to the development office to let us know you would like your donation to be designated to the Hourani Scholarship Fund and then follow the instructions to make an online donation. When we send an acknowledgement letter, we will confirm that the money has been designated to the Fund.
  • by post using the attached donation forms: donations to the Fund can be tax-effective for tax payers in the UK, USA, Canada and Germany. Otherwise, please use this overseas form.
  • by phone (credit card donations) on +44 (0)1865 274497 or 274496.
