MIDDLE EAST CENTRE FRIDAY SEMINAR SERIES: The state of Egypt, the State of Palestine

Christian Berger holds the position of Director for North Africa, Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and Iran at the European Union External Action Service in Brussels. In previous positions he served with the United Nations in the Middle East (1986/87 with UNDOF on the Golan Heights, and 1988-1994 with UNRWA in Gaza and Jerusalem), and from 1994-1997 with the OSCE in Vienna.In 1997 he joined the European institutions in Brussels; as of 1999 with the European Commission (desk Syria; Political Advisor on Middle Eastern issues), from 2005 to 2006 he served as EU-Representative to the Quartet Special Envoy Mr James Wolfensohn; from 2006 to 2008 he held the position of Head of the Crisis Response & Peace-building Unit; from 2008-2011 he served as EU Representative in Jerusalem before joining the newly established European External Action Service in 2011. Christian Berger is Austrian citizen and holds law degrees from Vienna and London.
