The images in this gallery are from the Humphrey Bowman Collection GB165-0034 Album 1, which was bequeathed to St Antony's College in 1965. The author of the photographs is unknown and some of the photographs were probably published as a souvenirs for pilgrims to the Hajj. The captions are from the original album.

A pre-war group taken at Mecca during the Turkish regime. The Turkish Head priest is seen standing on the raised platform. On his left is the Turkish Governor of Mecca. The "Mahmal" (or Holy Carpet) enclosed in a canopy with escort all dressed in "Hhram" or pilgrim's garb.

The Holy Prophet's tomb at Medina. The Mount at "ARAFAT" where the actual Hajj takes place. Arafat is about 13 miles east of Mecca.

"Janat el Moallah" or the cemetery in the vicinity of Mecca, where most of the Holy Prophet's family are buried. The central tomb contains the remains of the first convert. "Jannat-el-Bagi" of the cemetery in Medina where several of the Holy Prophet's family are buried amongst whom were Fatima his daughter and Hassan his grandson.
