The Azizeh Sheibani Essay Prize in Iranian Studies

The Middle East Centre is pleased to invite submissions for the 2011 Azizeh Sheibani Essay Prize in Iranian Studies.

The prize will be awarded to the best essay in Iranian studies, in any discipline of the humanities or social sciences. The essays will be assessed on the basis of their originality of research or argumentation.

The essay should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words in length, including footnotes and references. Applicants may choose the most suitable form of citation, though all submissions should be written to the highest academic standard. Where appropriate, the judges may try to assist authors with the publication of the winning essay in a suitable journal.

Applicants must be current or recent postgraduate students in any masters or doctoral program of Oxford University.

The deadline for submissions is the Friday of the First Week of Trinity Term, 2011 (6 May 2011).

All submissions should be sent as a PDF file by email to the Middle East Centre Administrator, Mrs Julia Cook at

The winner will be announced on the Friday of the Eighth Week of Trinity Term. The winner will be invited to dine with the judges at High Table in St Antony’s College, and will receive an award of £250.

Hadid Doctoral Studentship Advert (pdf file)

The Middle East Centre is pleased to invite applications for the Hadid Doctoral Studentship for the 2011-12 academic year. The Hadid Studentship is available to continuing doctoral students working on compelling issues in the modern Middle East.

Guidelines for applications to the Hadid Studentship are as follows:

1. Only ongoing students (i.e. already admitted and working toward a DPhil in the current academic year) are eligible.
2. The studentship is for one year, but recipients of the studentship may apply again in subsequent years.
5. The Studentship may not be held concurrently with other major awards such as the AHRC Doctoral Award or Clarendon Bursary.

The award will be made on the basis of academic excellence, though preference may be shown for candidates with demonstrated need, without regard to nationality. All applications will receive equal consideration regardless of college affiliation at the time of application, though a successful candidate from outside St. Antony’s will be required to transfer to St Antony's College at the time of taking up the award. The value of the Hadid Studentship in 2011/12 will be £7,000.

Applications should include the following:

1. current curriculum vita
2. brief statement detailing any currently-held studentships, and listing all forms of support for which you have applied this year.
3. letter of reference from the thesis supervisor
4. thesis proposal of no more than 1,500 words in length.

Hourani Doctoral Studentship Advert (pdf file)

The Middle East Centre is pleased to invite applications for the Hourani Doctoral Studentship for the 2011-12 academic year. The Hourani Studentship is available to continuing doctoral students working on topics related to the modern Middle-East in the social sciences and humanities. Students in all disciplines of the social science and humanities are eligible. Students conducting research in all parts of the region are eligible (the Arab world, Israel, Turkey, Iran).

Guidelines for applications to the Hourani Studentship are as follows:

1. Only ongoing students (i.e. already admitted and working toward a DPhil in the current academic year) are eligible.

The Middle East Centre is pleased to invite applications for the Pachachi Doctoral Studentship for the 2011-12 academic year. The Pachachi Studentship is available to continuing doctoral students working on the modern history (broadly defined) and the social sciences of the Arab world.

FELLOWSHIPS

Centre for Lebanese Studies Visiting Fellowship

The Middle East Centre, in association with the Centre for Lebanese Studies (CLS), invites applications for the CLS Visiting Fellowship, tenable for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Applicants should be scholars of Lebanon with an established record of academic excellence, normally holding the Ph.D. or equivalent. Current students are not eligible to apply. Preference may be shown to citizens of Lebanon or scholars of Lebanese origins who are citizens of other countries. Applicants should be engaged in research in either the humanities or social sciences, on a topic of relevance to modern Lebanon (19th century to present day). Applicants must demonstrate sufficient command of English to take full advantage of and contribute to the academic life of Oxford University.

The CLS Visiting Fellow will be a member of St Antony’s College. The benefits of the Fellowship include a stipend of £22,200; free meals in the College Hall when it is open; eight High Table dinners per term (drink and dessert to be paid for as taken); a travel allowance of £775; and the use of a workroom in the Middle East Centre. The post will be tenable for nine months, from October through June.

The duties of the post are to promote knowledge, and scholarship on Lebanon through individual research and public lectures. The person appointed would normally organize a workshop or conference related to the subject of their research in the course of their Fellowship, in cooperation with the Middle East Centre and the Centre for Lebanese Studies. The person appointed may be asked to assist in limited supervision of masters and doctoral students working on Lebanon.
