One of the major challenges of our time is how to combine freedom and diversity in multi-ethnic societies in which a wide variety of religious, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds are represented. This research project looks at lessons from experience in five advanced Western democracies: Britain, France, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Contributors have set out to gather published indicators and relevant analyses, as well as pursuing individual avenues of original research. The focus of the resulting report is firmly on conclusions useful for public policy.
