Venue:
Nissan Lecture Theatre, St Antony's College
Speaker(s):
Professor Alastair Iain Johnston (Harvard)
Convenor:
Professor Rosemary Foot
Series:
Chun-tu Hsueh Distingished Lecture

Iain Johnston's research and teaching interests include socialization in international institutions, the analysis of identity in the social sciences, and ideational sources of strategic choice, mostly with reference to China and East Asia. He is the author of Cultural Realism: Strategic Culture and Grand Strategy in Chinese History and Social States: China in International Institutions, 1980-2000.

This lecture will be a revisionist 'unpacking' of the dominant discourse in media and pundit analysis of change in Chinese diplomacy in the last couple of years. Professor Johnston will look at the 'assertive China' narrative that has appeared in the past couple of years, how it has emerged, and where it is empirically or analytically problematic.
