Abstract: This talk considers two intersecting trends in forced migration – urbanisation of refugee populations, and a policy approach of securitization - as they relate to refugees from Myanmar in Kuala Lumpur. It will outline mechanisms of securitization used by the state (including arrests and immigration raids, detention and deportation), and the conditions this creates for forced migrants in the country.  It will also examine refugees’ responses to this environment of political and personal insecurity, focusing on the role of community organisations.
