African Studies Seminar

How and in what ways did colonies compare? This roundtable event brings together four researchers - Nicole Eggers (Loyola), Miles Larmer (Oxford), Violette Pouillard (ULB) and Eva Schalbroek (Cambridge) - studying how different African colonial regimes sought to understand the places and peoples they colonised by studying what other colonists did and comparing their practices and knowledge production processes. The event will also examine the added value of studying cross-border comparative colonialism. The four case studies will focus on mining companies, zoological societies, public health initiatives and detention and punishment regimes. Ramon Sarro (Oxford) will act as discussant.
