Former Visiting Fellow wins Book Award

22 June 2016

Daisy Hay, a former Alistair Horne Visiting Fellow at St Antony’s, has won a Somerset Maugham Award for her latest book Mr and Mrs Disraeli: A Strange Romance. The award-wining work focusses on the relationship of the former Prime Minister of Great Britain and his wife Mary Anne. It was inspired in part by a scribbled document in the Bodleian Library containing a table listing the qualities of the couple written by Mary Anne Disraeli.

The award was set up by W. Somerset Maugham in 1947 to enable young writers to enrich their work through foreign travel. Awards are given for a published work of any genre (other than drama) by a writer under 35.

Daisy was the Alistair Horne Fellow in 2009-2010 at St Antony's College. She is currently Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Archival Studies at the University of Exeter, and was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Thinker in 2014-15.
