Social Security in China Project

Social Security in China Project

This project, directed by Stein Ringen, aimed to follow social welfare policies in the People’s Republic of China. China is in the midst of a process of radical social reform, mirroring in many respects its economic reform. A new social insurance law came into effect in 2011 which maps out a trajectory towards a comprehensive welfare state. The project will analyse social trends and public policy responses to social issues and tensions. It will compare social welfare policies in China to those of neighbouring countries in Asia and more broadly internationally. The overriding questions are what kind of welfare state is emerging and what social reform can teach us about state and state capacity in China.
