Dr Robert Pyrah http://www.ceelbas.ac.uk). A
linguist and cultural historian by training, he was Lecturer in
German at Brasenose College, Oxford, 2003-2004 and took his
doctorate from the University of Oxford (Magdalen College) in 2005.
Robert is currently responsible for research activities and
seminars in the field of 'cultural processes in Eastern Europe' as
part of the CEELBAS network.
His research focuses on Central European culture and politics in the post-Habsburg and contemporary eras, and in particular: the workings of cultural institutions such as the theatre; nationalism; and politicised uses of the Arts. He is currently researching a contracted monograph on the 20th-century cultural history of L'viv (Ukraine), and recently published The Burgtheater and Austrian Identity: Theatre and Cultural Politics in Vienna, 1918-38 (Oxford: Legenda, 2007). Peer-reviewed articles on the Vienna state theatres and clerical fascism in Austria recently appear in Austrian Studies (2006) and Totalitarian Movements and Political Religions (2007) respectively. Robert has co-founded two international research networks, 'Austrian Research UK & Ireland' (http://www.austrianresearch.org) and 'Oxford Austrian and Central European Studies'. He jointly established and runs an interdisciplinary Central European Seminar at the University, now in its second year. Email: robert.pyrah@sant.ox.ac.uk |
