Demetrios A. Theophylactou
Demetrios A. Theophylactou is a Senior Associate Member at the European Studies Centre (ESC – SEESOX), St Antony’s College, University of Oxford. He was recently a fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. Dr. Theophylactou has been a career diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Cyprus, since 1994. He had been seconded to the European Commission in Brussels from 2006 to 2009 and served at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the European Union soon after his country’s accession to the EU in 2004. Prior to that he served in the Political Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia, and was posted to the Cyprus High Commission in Australia and the Cyprus Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. He has held diplomatic as well as press counsellor posts. Dr. Theophylactou is an adjunct faculty member at Boston University and at the Facultés Universitaires Saint Louis in Belgium. Having published and lectured broadly, he taught a range of courses at Washington State University’s College of Liberal Arts, where he received a Ph.D. in Political Science and at the university’s leading Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, where he received a Master’s in Political Communication. He also worked for CNN, and for the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CYBC) as a news editor. While at Oxford, he is pursuing research on conflict prevention and on Turkey’s accession course to the European Union.
