Writing Up bursaries (formerly known as Pre-doctoral bursaries)

Awards of at least £1,000 are available to current St Antony's DPhil students in their third or fourth year of study.

For further details and deadlines please refer to the following Information Sheet

 Carr and Stahl Travel Funds

These funds are available to assist students in their research related expenses or to fund attendance at conferences to which research students have been invited to present their research findings.

Priority in the award of these grants will be given to research students who have passed their qualifying examination for DPhil status. Students who are waiting for the result of a transfer of status application may be offered a conditional award. Applications from MPhil students for a grant towards the cost of research for their dissertation will also be considered if sufficient resources are available. MSc students may apply if fieldwork is required for their compulsory dissertation and strongly supported by their supervisor.

It should be stressed that the resources of both funds are very limited, and that competition is likely to be intense. Students are strongly urged to seek funding from other sources, including their Departments or Faculties. Evidence of students' initiative in securing additional funding will be taken into consideration by the selection committee.

The University's Fees and Funding website has a guide to funding for on-course graduates.

Students should not normally expect to receive total grants in excess of £600 during their time at the College.

Applications should be sent to the Bursary Assistant, Alison Winstone (Bursary@sant.ox.ac.uk) by 12 noon UK time on Friday of Sixth Week of the term in question. Results will be announced at the end of term.

Along with the completed application form applicants must provide:

  • A statement of the research project in at least 500 words, and details of fieldwork plans OR details of the conference to be attended, including an abstract of the paper to be presented and evidence of acceptance of the paper by conference organizers
  • A Curriculum Vitae/resumé
  • Application Form

Each candidate should arrange for a separate confidential and reasoned recommendation from his or her supervisor to be submitted to the Senior Tutor c/o the Bursary Assistant by the end of sixth week. Email address: Bursary@sant.ox.ac.uk
