Senior Membership
Apart from the 40 or so members of Governing Body and the small number of Research, Honorary, Foundation and Emeritus Fellows, the College also has 80 Visiting Senior Members each year. These fall into two main categories: Visiting Fellowships and Senior Associate Membership (SAMs). Visiting Fellows Visiting Fellows are normally associated with regional Centres; for example the Nissan Visiting Fellow with the Nissan Institute; the Agatha Harrison Visiting Fellow with the Asian Studies Centre; the Andres Bello Visiting Fellow with the Latin American Centre; the Stifterverband Visiting Fellow with the European Studies Centre and the Iranian Visiting Fellow with the Middle East Centre. Where Visiting Fellowships are associated with regions of the world, they are advertised in the country of origin and initial selection is carried out locally, usually with the assistance of an individual Governing Body Fellow. Formal election then takes place at the College and are confirmed by Governing Body. Visiting Fellowships usually carry a stipend and certain other benefits. Certain other Visiting Fellowships where application should be made direct to the College are advertised annually. Senior Associate Members (SAMs) The College has about 60 Senior Associate Members each year. Senior Associate members, or SAMs as they are known, are usually academics on sabbatical leave, who wish to come to the College to work within the regional Centres and/or with particular Fellows for varying periods of time from one term to one academic year. Senior Associate members must be elected via the Fellowships Committee and Governing Body. Those wishing to be considered for Senior Associate Membership will need to have sponsorship from a Governing Body Fellow and initial contact should be made via the individual Fellow, to whom an up-to-date curriculum vitae and a brief outline of the research proposal should be sent. The College charges a membership fee for SAMs which provides access to College facilities and some University facilities, including the Bodleian Library. There are no research funds for SAMs and individuals must be entirely self-financing. Guest Members and Senior Common Room Members The College also has a limited number of Senior Common Room (SCR) Members and Guest Members who are nominated by Governing Body Fellows.
