DPhil student Imran wins Student Union Award

22 June 2022

We are proud to announce that DPhil student Imran Visram has been awarded the 2022 Oxford Student Union Welfare Award.

Imran was recognised for his involvement at St Antony's College and the wider University during the SU Student Awards Evening held at the Oxford Town Hall on 21 June 2022. He was presented with an award for helping “make Oxford a kinder and safer space when it comes to wellbeing and mental health”.

Imran is both the Oxford University LGBTQ+ Society Faith Representative and LGBTQ+ Representative for St Antony’s College. He has helped to organise a range of welfare events for students, including afternoon tea, queer life drawing, rainbow brunches, and productivity mornings. The majority of these events were not alcohol-centered, ensuring that a broad group of students could take part and enjoy the sense of community fostered.

This is a particularly special achievement as there were over 2,000 nominees. All nominations for the SU Awards were submitted by students, and the shortlists and winners were decided by the SU Sabbatical Officers. In their nominations, students mentioned that Imran "has gone above and beyond to create a warm and welcoming environment for LGBT+ students at Oxford”.
