The Warden is sad to have learnt of the death of Lord Carrington.
He served as a Major in the Grenadier Guards, and awarded the Military Cross, in the Second World After leaving the Army, he became involved in politics and had a long and varied political career under every Conservative Prime Minister from Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher.
After leaving government in 1982, he went on to become chairman of British General Electric Company (1983-1984) and Secretary General of NATO from 1984 to 1988. As Secretary General of NATO, he was pivotal in preventing a war between Greece and Turkey in 1987.
He was made an Honorary Fellow of St Antony's College in 1982.
