Romila Thapar elected to American Philosphical Society

6 June 2019

The American Philosophical Society has elected Professor Romila Thapar (Honorary Fellow) as an international member at its Annual Spring Meeting. Her citation reads that she 'is the greatest living historian of India.  Her careful scholarship on the emperor Aśoka, the epigraphy of the Mauryan period, and the multiple historiographies surrounding the contested Hindu and Muslim history of Somnath, are brilliant, ground-breaking studies.   She has embraced contemporary philosophical debates, producing a model of open-minded and inclusive history that has advanced both the theory and the practice of Indian historiography.'
