Understanding right-wing populism | New report co-authored by Governing Body Fellow Tim Vlandas

2 September 2022

Governing Body Fellow, Tim Vlandas has co-authored a report for the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), with the title Understanding right-wing populism and what to do about it.

Co-authored with Daphne Halikiopoulou (University of Reading), the report presents a combination of empirical and qualitative analyses of right-wing populist parties (RWPPs) in seventeen European countries.

In order to better understand the success of European right-wing populist parties (RWPPs) the report looks at:

  • People: Why do individual people vote for RWPPs? (Demand)
  • Parties: What makes certain RWP parties more successful than others? (Supply)
  • Policies: What is the role of social policies in facilitating and/or moderating RWPP success?

The report has been presented in the FES offices in Athens, Ljubljana and Vienna, and discussed in a New Stateman Podcast and El Pais.
