3 July 2019

There is a renewed interest in Vasily Grossman, as his epic work on Stalingrad has recently been translated into English for the first time by Robert Chandler.

John Garrard (Senior Associate Member, 1985 and 2015) wrote Inside the Soviet Writers Union and Russian Orthodoxy Resurgent whilst at the College, and in November 2018 published, with his wife Carol, a chapter on Grossman in A Writer's Freedom, entitled: 'Free at Last: Vasily Grossman and the Battle for Stalingrad.'

Carol and John also published a biography of Grossman in 1996, the Life and Fate of Vasily Grossmanfor those wishing to know more about this remarkable writer. The couple's research archive now resides at the Houghton Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Harvard.
