The Implications of Brexit for Ireland
The Panel for this event will comprise of: Dr Martin Mansergh, Denis Staunton and Mark Durkan.
The Discussant for this Panel will be Professor Desmond King.
Denis Staunton has been London Editor of The Irish Times since October 2015, leading its coverage of Brexit. Before moving to London, he was the newspaper's Deputy Editor and he has also served as Foreign Editor and as a correspondent in Washington, Brussels and Berlin.
Dr Martin Mansergh has had a distinguished career as a public servant and government minister in Ireland. He played a crucial role in the Northern Ireland peace process and has written and commented widely on modern Irish history and he is vice-chair of the Government’s Expert Advisory Group on the Decade of Centenaries. Martin was at Christ Church, obtained a first class honours degree in PPE in 1969, and was awarded a D.Phil. for a thesis on pre-revolutionary French history in 1974. Martin holds an honorary doctorate from the National University of Ireland, and is a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
Mark Durkan: Former deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland (2001-2). Finance Minister (1999-2002). A key negotiator of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, subsequently directly involved in implementing its three institutional Strands ie Northern Ireland Executive & Assembly, North-South Ministerial Council & British-Irish Council. MP for Foyle (Derry City) 2005-2017 & served on the Brexit Select Committee 2016-7. SDLP leader 2001-10.
Professor Desmond King is the Andrew Mellon Professor of American Government at Oxford, Professorial Fellow Nuffield College, Director of Graduate Studies (Politics), and Emeritus Fellow St John’s College, Oxford.
