After a dramatic campaign during which the lead in the polls alternated between all three major parties, the Canadian federal election of 19 October resulted in an unexpectedly decisive victory for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, bringing to an end the nearly decade-long premiership of Stephen Harper. In this panel discussion, Profs Michael Hawes (Queen’s), Christopher Kirkey (SUNY-Plattsburgh), Jocelyn Létourneau (Laval), and Margaret MacMillan (St Antony’s) will analyse the election results and examine what this major shift in the Canadian political landscape might mean for the country, its relations with its North American neighbours, and its place in the wider world.
