Bill Emmott is an independent writer and consultant best known for his time as Editor in Chief of The Economist (1993-2006) and his books on Japan, which began with the bestselling The Sun Also Sets in 1989. He was a visiting fellow at All Souls in 2017-18, a visiting fellow in practice at the Blavatnik School of Government in 2015-17, and is an honorary fellow of Magdalen. The author of 13 books, his latest was The Fate of the West in 2017. His next book, to be published in Japanese by Nikkei in spring 2019, will be on the role of women in Japan’s future. In Japan, he is a member of Tokyo University’s Global Advisory Board and a visiting professor at Shujitsu Gakuen in Okayama. In 2016 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun — Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. In January 2019 he will become chairman of the Japan Society of the UK.
