The Making of Nelson Mandela II

The Making of Nelson Mandela II

Tuesday, 4 February 2014 - 5:00pm
Venue:
Dahrendorf, St Antony's
Speaker(s):
Convenor:
South African Discussion Group

This discussion will explore a moment during which the African National Congress decided to focus on one individual, i.e. Nelson Mandela, as the face of the anti-apartheid campaign, and thus the birth of the ‘Free Mandela’ campaign. Possible areas of exploration may include the cultural and material construction of Nelson Mandela’s life, as well as how the campaign impinged upon the construction of Mandela’s sense of self and his political mission. A discussion around the ANC’s marketing strategies, and what it can reveals about the party’s own sense of itself is also relevant.
