The panel discussion centres on a recent book on European memory which departs from a critique of the unreflected instrumentalisation of ‘European Memory’ as exposed in current public and academic discourse. Memory discourses provide entrance for understanding the plurality of what Europeans and outsiders have understood as ‘European’ about their past against the current challenges of European integration.

Félix Krawatzek and Friedemann Pestel will present the arguments developed in the book which will be discussed from an interdisciplinary angle by Gwendolyn Sasse (Politics) and Nicholas Stargardt (History).
