Populism, Politics and Unpolitics in Contemporary Europe
This talk focuses on how populism conceives of politics. It will examine the way in which populism in contemporary Europe is underpinned by a celebration of 'unpolitics' as a rejection of other dominant conceptions of politics. The talk examines ways in which some of the common tropes displayed by populist actors in Europe reveal this rejection of politics in the looking at conspiracy theories, quasi-religious qualities of populism and metaphors of war.
Paul Taggart is Professor of Politics and Director of the Sussex European Institute, University of Sussex.
