Towards Democracy and Reconciliation: Challenges Facing Myanmar’s Incoming Government

After winning a landslide victory in historic elections in Myanmar in November 2015, the National League for Democracy will form a new government on 1 April, cementing a remarkably smooth (to this point) transition of power. But the excitement felt inside and outside of the country is tempered by an understanding that the authority of the new government will be constrained by the Burmese military’s continued influence in politics and control of key ministries and infrastructure. Within these constraints, how will the new government address the country’s myriad challenges?

This full-day workshop will convene over a dozen UK experts on Myanmar, drawn from academic, advocacy, and activist communities. Presenters will focus on the challenges facing the incoming NLD government, identifying key stakeholders, persistent and emerging impediments, and potential policy responses. Subjects considered will include military legacies, governance concerns, social issues, land and resource management, and conflict and displacement. See below for detailed schedule.
