Dr Jonathan Liljeblad

Jonathan Liljeblad is currently Associate Professor at the Australian National University College of Law. He holds a Phd and JD from the University of Southern California, an MS from the University of Washington, and a BS from the California Institute of Technology. His research studies the complexities of promoting international norms in developing countries, with a focus on Indigenous rights, international human rights, and international environmental law. His fieldwork is primarily in Southeast Asia, where he has been engaged with development programs of international organisations such as the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), Asia Development Bank (ADB), Danish Institute of Human Rights (DIHR), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS). He was born as a member of the Pa’Oh Indigenous peoples of Shan State, Myanmar, and grew up in Sweden and the United States. While at Oxford, he will be working on monograph regarding ‘Indigenous Rights to the Environment’ and a co-edited book project on ‘Indigenous Theories of International Law.’
