Dr. Julia De Clerck-Sachsse is a diplomat and academic specialising in European Union politics and foreign policy strategy. As an academic visitor at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University, Julia is working on the role of language and emotions in the European Union’s narrative, with a particular view to geopolitics. Previously she was Senior Adviser in the Policy Planning Staff of the European External Action Service, the EU’s diplomatic corps, where she focused on transatlantic relations and the implementation of the EU’s foreign policy strategy. From 2012-2016 she served as the speechwriter and communications adviser to EU High Representatives for Foreign and Security Policy, Lady Catherine Ashton and Federica Mogherini. Julia has also worked for the Centre for European Policy Studies, the European Commission, and the German Federal Foreign Office. She is an adjunct professor at Sciences Po Paris as well as at the Free University of Brussels where she is also a member of the board of the Global Diplomacy programme. Julia is a Council Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and a Senior Non-Resident Fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States. She holds an MPhil and DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford.
