Professor Hatem Ete

Ete is an Associate Professor at the Sociology Department of the Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. He served as a Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister between 2014-2018 and director of political research at the SETA Foundation, an Ankara-based think-tank, between 2008-2014. He was also a visiting scholar at Columbia University for the 2007-2008 academic year. A graduate of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, he completed both his M.A. and PhD degrees in Sociology.
He has authored numerous works in both Turkish and English on Turkish political and social life. His books include The Gezi Park Protests: A Political, Sociological and Discursive Analysis (2014), From Idealism (Ülkücülük) to Reactive Nationalism: The Ideology and Voting Base of MHP (2014), Dominant Party in Comparative Perspective: The Case of JDP (2013). He has also authored numerous academic articles, policy reports and commentaries on political parties, social movements, identity politics, and the changing nature of the political system in Turkey. Over the last few years, Ete as director of Ankara Institute based in Ankara has directed and conducted a series of research studies on society’s perception of religion, nationalism, state and democracy in Turkey.
