With the support of the Palestine Veterans' Association, George Webb, author of Epitaph of an Army of Peacekeepers and Eric Lowe, author of Forgotten Conscripts. Prelude to Palestine’s struggle for survival and Palestine Scrapbook, the Middle East Centre Archive has embarked upon a project to collect the papers and photographs of members of the armed services who served during the Palestine Mandate. | ![]() |
Why give papers and photographs from your service in Palestine?
- Personal papers are essential to historians studying the Palestine Mandate. The papers and photographs of members of the armed services who served in Palestine provide another view of the Palestine Mandate that is very often not to be found in the dry official papers of senior officials who were often distant from the challenges faced by those enforcing security on the ground.
- The papers will be well looked after and will serve as a lasting memorial to individual service in Palestine. Each collection of papers will bear the name of the person who created the papers as well as biographical details for that person.
- The papers will be amongst good company. The MEC Archive has an excellent Collection on the Palestine Mandate including the papers of General Sir Robert Haining, Brigadier Reginald Rathbone as well as the papers of the last High Commissioner Sir Alan Cunningham and an extensive collection of Palestine Police papers.
How can I add material to the MEC Archive?
