The School of Anthropology and Museum Anthropology (SAME) and St Antony’s College are recruiting an Associate Professor of Social Anthropology. The postholder will be based at the School which is a leading centre for anthropological teaching and research in the UK and the world. They will contribute significantly to teaching for the School’s Social Anthropology Masters programmes, undertake world-leading research and make a contribution to School administration. The appointee will also be a Governing Body Fellow and Trustee of St Antony’s College.
We are looking for candidates with a commitment to empirical research based on ethnographic depth, with the ability to teach across the breadth of social anthropology. They will have research interests which are complementary to those in our existing research community. Preference may be given to candidates with research interests in gender and sexuality, environment, race or religion.
Applications are encouraged from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are underrepresented in academic posts in Oxford.
You should hold a doctorate in social anthropology and have the excellent interpersonal skills necessary for teaching high-achieving students; a track record of obtaining research funding, evidence of research accomplishment and future potential, with a demonstrable commitment to ethnography, and the collaboration and leadership skills necessary to manage excellent research programmes and to attract external funding.
The post is offered on a full-time basis, available from October 2025 (for the start of Michaelmas Term) or as soon as possible thereafter.
