Eni Scholarship testimonials 18/19

The Eni Scholarship at St Antony’s College, in partnership with the international integrated energy company Eni, offered in 18/19 up to three students from Angola, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, or the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) the opportunity to study for a fully funded degree.  It is part of a joint initiative between Eni and St Antony’s to invest in and strengthen African Leadership.

Thank you for making a comprehensive world class education a reality. From being able to pursue my academic research on The Language of the Adinkra, to being a student consultant with The Student Consultancy, volunteering on the African-Oxon project and working as a Telephone Campaign Caller just two terms into my MSc Programme (African Studies), I am receiving my fair share of the life changing experiences and opportunities only Oxford and St Antony’s College can provide. The future looks bright and an Eni Scholarship has made it possible, and for that I am deeply grateful

I am a Ghanaian, and currently studying for the MSc in African Studies.  My dissertation explores the dynamics of electoral quality in emerging democracies, focusing on my home country Ghana. I am hopeful the outcome of this project will contribute to how new democracies can be shielded from electoral subversion in a time of global decline of democracy. My time in Oxford so far has been fulfilling as I encounter new challenges to expand my intellectual capacity in my quest to become a career academic. The Eni scholarship has put me closer to my dream by funding my studies, which would have other been unthinkably impossible given my modest economic background. Being a fully funded student, I am not burdened by financial constraints and thus well placed to do my absolute best. The funding has set me on a good path to succeed in future.

I never understood what dream materialization was, until the 2nd of May 2018 then I had a shock of my entire life. Right from there, I knew my life had changed. The possibility of studying in Oxford—one of the best universities in the world, was nil but due to the generosity of the International integrated energy company, Eni, in partnership with St. Antony’s college, I am here in Oxford. Since the scholarship covers fully the cost of my studies and provides me with stipends, I study and do research without worry of financial issues. Within these few months of my stay in Oxford, I have really gained much weight in terms of knowledge acquisition—due to the presence of libraries stocked with all relevant materials needed for learning and research and scholarly interaction with professors and other colleagues both in the college and at the department. I am very grateful to the Eni, as with this highly desirable scholarship has not only lightened a financial burden but provided a gift of opportunity and a great stepping stone for my goals set for the future. I am studying for the MSC in African Studies and my research focusses on political parties and elections in Africa.
