Professor Kais Firro (1944-2019)
Professor Kais Firro, Professor of Middle Eastern History at the University of Haifa, passed away on 10 September, 2019. He was 75. He was a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) at St Antony’s between 1995 and 1996, and was also a Senior Associate Member on several occasions, in 1986, 1990 and 2005. In his year as a JRF he worked on the topic of ‘Lebanon between the Two World Wars – Elites, Clans and Ethnopolitics in Lebanon 1926-1943’. He also worked on the Druze, Shi’i and Alawi communities in Syria and Lebanon. He published A History of the Druzes in 1997, and Inventing Lebanon: Nationalism and the State under the Mandate in 2002.
