The Antonian

Spring 2023

Featuring Antonians on Ukraine, Telethon 2023, College news, alumni updates

Warden's Letter

It is a great pleasure to read so many updates about what you are doing; thank you for all your submissions. Please continue sending us your news, publications, and anything else that you like to share with our worldwide community of alumni by following this link.

This issue of The Antonian includes a feature in which alumni, current students, and our Max Hayward Fellow explain how they are involved and impacted by the war in Ukraine.

As we have been watching the dreadful news of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, I hope those of you who have family and friends in the affected regions are safe and well. This page on the University website sets out its response to the disaster and provides advice on how to support the relief efforts.

Many of you will be saddened to hear the news of Celia Kerslake’s passing. Celia came to Oxford in 1988 to take up a University Lectureship in Turkish with a Fellowship at St Antony’s and was a stalwart of our community for the following 23 years. You can read a tribute to Celia on our website.

The second half of Trinity is a bit calmer than the rest of the year, with fewer events taking place, but we look forward to the first four Tuesdays of the Term when the next session of the Visiting Parliamentary Fellows Programme will take place. Confirmed events are on 25 April when Lord (George) Robertson, the former Secretary General of NATO, will discuss the current situation in Ukraine and on 16 May, Lord (David) Howell, Chairman of the House of Lords International Relations Committee and Chairman of the Commonwealth Societies Association, will discuss the Commonwealth and its place in the world. Please stay tuned by following this link or take a look at our social media channels.

Many Antonians in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, England, Switzerland, and Thailand/Malaysia have kindly given the Development Office consent to pass on their email addresses to our Liaison Officer in those countries, to keep their own mailing lists and organise Antonian get-togethers. In case you have missed the mailing, you can give consent by entering your details here. If you would be interested in becoming a Liaison Officer for your city, region or country, please contact the Development team

The 1990s cohort of Antonians will have received a save the date for the Gaudy taking place on 16/17 September at the College. It promises to be a very special occasion, with alumni travelling from all over the world to attend. Many of our emeriti will also be there. If you would like to send us pictures of your time at St Antony’s in advance, please do so to: alumni.office@sant.ox.ac.uk.

In this newsletter, you can read about the recent telephone campaign and our ambition to support students from the Global South through the DAC Scholarship. As ever, thank you for all your incredible generosity. It is very much appreciated.
