William Clevenger (1931-2021)

William Clevenger (BLitt Modern Middle East Studies, 1966) passed away on 21 January, 2021. He matriculated in 1966, studying with Albert Hourani and Elizabeth Monroe, and writing on the Young Turks. From St Antony’s, Mr Clevenger joined the World Bank. He remained a friend to and supporter of the College. His obituary in the Washington Post relates that he ‘maintained a lifelong interest in antiquity and literature as well as politics and world affairs. He loved classical music and hot jazz, merlot and good conversation.’

He is survived by Whitall Clevenger, who added that the time spent by the couple in St Antony’s were ‘halcyon days’ which would ‘hold a special place in my heart.’
