Brought up in England, Peter Harris gained an MPhil in International Relations at St Antony’s College in 1977. He went on to work in broadcasting, human rights and development aid, with assignments in London, New York, Beijing, Jakarta, Yangon and elsewhere. In the 2000s he settled in Wellington with his wife, Vicky Noble, a health professional brought up in Whanganui, and their three children, Max, Ben and Alexis, who are respectively a barrister, businessman and housing specialist.

Peter is currently a Senior Fellow at the Contemporary China Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington, where he was previously Director of Asian Studies. In addition to his MPhil, he has a BA (Hons) in Chinese from New College, Oxford, and a PhD in Asian History from Monash University, Melbourne.
