Studying: DPhil Sociology

We’re delighted to welcome Natalie to St Antony’s College from Hong Kong to study DPhil Sociology. In this interview, we asked Natalie about her fascinating field of cutting-edge research and what she’s looking forward to about St Antony’s.

Could you tell us your name, where you are from and the programme you will study at St Antony’s College?

My name is Natalie Mae Evelyn, and I’m from Hong Kong. I will be doing the DPhil in Sociology under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Lusthaus.

What inspired you to apply to the University of Oxford?

The University of Oxford’s reputation for academic excellence and its rich history inspired my application. The opportunity to engage with world-renowned scholars and a diverse cohort of students in my field of interest was particularly appealing. My MPhil research builds primarily on Dr Jonathan Lusthaus‘s work, and the prospect of collaborating closely with such a prominent figure in the field who shares similar theoretical interests is compelling.

Can you share a bit about your journey to get here?

Preceding the DPhil at Oxford, I received a research postgraduate degree (MPhil) from the University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Dr Peng Wang. I am humbled to work with several giants in the field during my MPhil study, having an opportunity to publish on the special issue organised and edited by Professor Federico Varese. The publications of my MPhil are collaborated with Dr Peng Wang, supported by General Research Fund and Early Career Scheme.

Despite this, my journey resembles with that of many other applicants in its challenges. Balancing the demands of thesis writing and intensive research projects with the rigorous preparation required for Oxford’s application process proved to be a formidable task. This period of juggling academic commitments with future aspirations was both demanding and enlightening, pushing me to refine my time management skills and solidify my commitment to pursuing advanced studies. The experience of navigating these concurrent responsibilities not only tested my resilience but also reinforced my passion for academic pursuit, ultimately strengthening my resolve to embark on this next chapter at Oxford.

What is your field of research? Could you explain a bit about it?

My field of research focuses on the intersection of technology, cybercrime, and gender. Specifically, I’m interested in exploring how sexism and sexual repression inadvertently contribute to “cybercrime.” Pornography is one of the most prevalent cybercrimes; typically, research on pornography primarily focuses on the objectification, victimization, and marginalization of females and LGBTQ+ communities. However, there’s a lack of insight into how these communities negotiate social stigmatization and repression of sexual desire.

The prohibition of pornography and societal gender norms unintentionally drive females and LGBTQ+ individuals into illicit online markets. They redefine cybercrime, using digital platforms as spaces to reclaim their freedom of expression and satisfaction of harmless sexual desires through the production, exchange, and possession of erotic content. With the rise of AI, questions emerge: how does the illegal online market resist or incorporate AI technology? Could participants potentially become victims of the very technology they use?

My research aims to connect cybercrime with broader social contexts, vis-a-vis gender and technological advancement. By grounding the theoretical framework in psychology and philosophy, my research ultimately seeks to explore how technology and cybercrime have become a playground for human libido.

What are you looking forward to about your time at St Antony’s College?

I’m eagerly looking forward to the interdisciplinary environment at St Antony’s College. The opportunity to engage with scholars and students from various disciplines will undoubtedly enrich my research perspective. I’m also excited about participating in the college’s renowned seminar series and networking events, which I believe will be invaluable for my academic and professional growth.

Do you have any advice for people considering applying to Oxford?

I recommend that individuals considering applying to Oxford engage in deep self-reflection by asking themselves two crucial questions: what are your long-term aspirations and how do they align with your potential Oxford experience?

Oxford University represents a dynamic gateway to numerous opportunities, offering a wealth of resources, connections, and intellectual stimulation. However, it’s essential to approach this journey with a clear sense of purpose and direction. Without a well-defined vision of your goals and how Oxford fits into your broader life plan, you may find yourself overwhelmed or adrift amidst the myriad possibilities.

While Oxford can provide an exceptional platform for growth and achievement, the ultimate responsibility for carving out your path lies with you. A thoughtful consideration of these questions will not only strengthen your application but also ensure that you make the most of your time at this prestigious institution, should you be accepted.
