Visiting Academics

Each year, we welcome approximately 200 Visiting and Associate College Members, who contribute to the rich diversity of our academic and social community.

FAQs

Academic Visitor memberships are usually tenable for between one term (eight weeks) and one year, depending on the length of the research you propose to undertake here.

An Academic Visitor attachment offers the opportunity to fulfil a specific research objective within the college’s fields of interest.

St Antony’s College is a world-renowned centre for research and teaching on global and regional issues. The college provides an interdisciplinary environment to study a range of subjects from development to international relations. Its seven research centres are focused on Africa, Asia, Europe, Japan, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia and Eurasia. In the regional centres and programmes, insights and methods from both social sciences and the humanities are used to deepen our understanding of the world. The work done here helps to inform public debate and public policy.Our Fellows, students and visiting researchers include leading experts on the regions of the world and on issues of global and transnational importance.

Academic Visitorships are elected positions; the College’s Governing Body considers applications six times a year. Nominations for membership must reach Governing Body four months before the proposed start date.

To proceed with an application, you will first need to identify a sponsor, as your application must be supported by a current Governing Body Fellow of the College. A list of Governing Body Fellows and their research interests may be found here. You are welcome to contact the Fellow directly or to request the Memberships Manager (memberships@sant.ox.ac.uk) liaise with them initially.

Once a sponsor has been identified, please send the Memberships Manager a brief CV/resumé, your research proposal (maximum, two pages) outlining your plans for your stay at St Antony’s College, and the dates of your planned visit.

For the academic year 2023-24, the cost is £1,000 per term and £4,000 for the year.

As College Members, Academic Visitors have a university card which gives access to the college’s academic and social facilities, the Bodleian Libraries, and a college email address.

This depends on availability for the period you are attached. As a College Member you can apply for accommodation through our Accommodation and Conference Office; accom-conf@sant.ox.ac.uk.

The college is set in the quiet and leafy residential area of North Oxford, just a ten-minute walk from the heart of the city and close to Jericho with its Walton Street pubs, eateries, and cinema. The College is next to North Parade, a pedestrian-only street with cafes, pubs, and a newsagent, among other shops.
