Ralf Fuecks was born in 1951. While at university, studying social sciences, economics, and political science, he was active in the student movements in Heidelberg and Bremen.

Fuecks joined the Green Party in 1982. In 1985 he was elected to the Bremen state parliament. He served as Co-President for the national Green Party in 1989/90. Fuecks returned to regional politics in Bremen in 1991, serving as Deputy Mayor and as City-State-Minister for Urban Development and Environmental Protection.

In 1996, Ralf Fuecks was elected as President of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, a think tank and international policy network affiliated with the German Green Party, a position he held for 21 years. The primary focus of his work was on sustainable development and green growth, modernization of the welfare state, migration, the future of Europe, and on foreign policy.

He is a regular contributor to national and international media and co-author to numerous books. In 1991, he was editor of the book "Sind die Grünen noch zu retten?" (Is There a Future for the Green Party?). In 2013 his book “Intelligent Wachsen – Die grüne Revolution” (Intelligent Growth – The Green Revolution) was published in German, followed by English, Polish and Russian editions. His latest book, “Freiheit verteidigen – wie wir den Kampf um die offene Gesellschaft gewinnen” (Defending Freedom – How We Can Win The Fight For An Open Society) is dealing with the challenge liberal democracy is facing at home and globally.

After leaving the Böll-Foundation Fuecks, together with his wife Marieluise Beck, a long term Member of Parliament, started a new project: The Center for Liberal Modernity, a think tank and policy network based in Berlin.
