Dr Marcin Walecki has since October 2020 been a new Director of EUROPAEUM, an association of Europe’s leading universities founded in 1992 by Oxford University.

A Polish national, he has over 25 years of democracy support and governance experience working in more than 50 countries around the world. Before joining EUROPAEUM he was a Head of Democratization Department of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights OSCE/ODIHR (www.osce.org/odihr), one of the world’s principal regional human rights bodies. He was also the first Executive Director of the European Partnership for Democracy (www.epd.eu), a not-for-profit organisation with a global remit to support democracy, that brings together a network of leading European organisations specialising in the different parts of a democratic system.

From 2004 to 2009 he was a Senior Adviser for Political Finance for IFES (www.ifes.org), responsible for designing and implementing programs to combat political corruption, securing electoral integrity, and regulating political finance.

Marcin holds degrees from the Department of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw (MA in Law Hons, Class I) and Oxford University (DPhil from St Antony's College).

He is a former Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence and a Senior Associate Member of St. Antony's College.

As an academic, he has a strong interest in democratic governance, rule of law, political parties, elections, and political corruption.
