Governing Body Fellow Tim Vlandas co-authors new book on growth, democracy and climate action
St Antony’s Governing Body Fellow and Professor of Comparative Political Economy and Social Policy at the University of Oxford Tim Vlandas has co-authored a new book examining one of the most pressing political challenges of our time: how democracies can tackle climate change while maintaining economic growth and democracy.
Growth, Democracy or Climate Action? The New Political Trilemma of Advanced Capitalism, co-authored with Aidan Regan, Hanna Schwander and Cyril Benoît, argues that governments face increasingly difficult trade-offs between economic prosperity, democratic legitimacy and ambitious climate action.
Drawing on insights from comparative political economy, the book explores how different countries are responding to the climate crisis and considers the political conditions needed to support a successful transition to a low-carbon economy. The authors argue that climate change is not only an environmental challenge, but also a fundamentally political one that raises important questions about the future of democratic capitalism.
Growth, Democracy or Climate Action? The New Political Trilemma of Advanced Capitalism is published by Agenda Publishing and is available on Amazon.
