Sports, Clubs and Societies

St Antony’s student communities run a range of clubs and societies, which in the past have included a yoga society and a drama society. Students will have opportunity to learn about the clubs and societies available during Welcome Week. Students wishing to start new clubs should contact the GCR Executive about the possibility of sponsorship, and the Head of Academic Office about incorporating your club.

Current clubs are:

  • Mahjong Society
A lively and light-hearted environment for students of all colleges to get together to learn and play Mahjong together!
  • St Antony’s Men’s Football Club
We play in the men’s MCR First Division, whilst also organising training and more informal football sessions.
  • Foxes
Foxes is a women’s football team. Members are from Wolfson, St Antony’s and St Cross, and we have regular trainings as well as matches in the league and cuppers.
  • St. Antony’s International Review (STAIR)
STAIR is Oxford University’s peer-reviewed Journal of International Affairs. Founded by graduate students of St. Antony’s College in 2005, STAIR has carved out a distinctive niche as a cross-disciplinary outlet for research on the most pressing contemporary global issues, providing a forum in which emerging scholars can publish their work alongside established academics and policymakers.
  • Oxford Perspektiva Society
The society invites academics, policy makers, journalists and think tankers from the Post-Soviet region to speak at St Antony’s College. The society also organises film screenings and socials for those interested in the region.
  • St Antony’s Boat Club (SABC)
St Antony’s rowing club. We organise regular outings on the Isis and compete on regattas.
  • Global South Film Society
By screening films and providing a place for discussion, the Global South Film Society wants to introduce splendid works around the globe to wider/ “mainstream” audiences. There are entertaining sessions with commercial films from different regions, as well as informative sessions that present the cultural traits, socio-economic-political issues, decolonization, and shared struggles of the Global South.
  • Oxford Iranian Society
Oxford Iranian Society promotes Iranian and Persian culture through various cultural events. Additionally, the society acts as a social hub for those interested in Iranian culture to get to know each other.
  • St Antony’s College Gardening Society
We maintain the fruit and vegetable garden at 21 Winchester Road, organise outdoor activities, and educate current St Antony’s students about sustainable gardening.
  • Oxford Middle East Review
The Oxford Middle East Review (OMER), established in 2016 at St Antony’s College, Oxford, is a student-run, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal for discussion and debate on issues relating to the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Peruvian Society
We aim to contribute to sharing the Peruvian culture and our national traditions among the University of Oxford student community. To do so, we will organise cultural events and keynote talks to spread the lessons learned from Peruvian disciplinary experts and sharing the experiences that might contribute to rich academic discussions within the university

    1. Email them both to gym@sant.ox.ac.uk

As such, gym users are asked to take due care and be mindful of this, cleaning up after themselves and wiping the equipment down after each use.

The email address gym@sant.ox.ac.uk is only monitored and responded to for the purposes of collecting forms and issuing access. Please direct any other queries to the GCR Sports Officer, who will report it to the Head of Operations and Estates.

Gym Inductions

Inductions are not mandatory but, are advised.

The Music Room is a GCR-run space that is bookable by students during term time for practice or performance for singing, playing one’s own instrument or using the electronic Yamaha Clavinova piano. It is located adjacent to the Founder’s Building. Booking the Music Room is via the Lodge.

In addition to the role that the Graduate Common Room (GCR) plays in supporting and representing the student body in College, the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) works at a University-wide level to provide a voice where individual Common Rooms cannot, and to support GCR officers in their work in College (e.g. through training).

The GCR has an OUSU Officer who is the student body’s main link with OUSU. However, all St Antony’s students are encouraged to learn more about OUSU and how to become involved and benefit from OUSU’s campaigns and events.

Please visit the OUSU website for more information.

From the GCR: Many new students ask whether joining the Union is worth the money. With membership fees ranging from £118 for one year to £236 for lifetime membership, it deserves considerable thought before paying up. Some information that may help students decide:

Consider how many events on the termcard you would like to attend and how many you could realistically make time for. The intensity of your workload will no doubt influence this.

    • Only the one term card is available at a time, but each is a good indication of the mix of speakers/events that tend to be available throughout the year.

    • Students enrolled on a one-year course may not have opportunity to make full use of their membership. Students embarking on a DPhil, however, may consider taking out life membership.

    • Many events can be attended by non-members for a fee (around £10) but priority is given to members. If events are not full to capacity, non-members will sometimes be granted access, but tickets for extremely popular events will be  balloted. Thus there is no guarantee that even members will always be able to attend.

Punting is a quintessentially Oxford (and Cambridge) pastime that is well worth trying. St Antony’s has a punt moored at the Cherwell Boathouse, a 10-15 minute walk from the College. The punt is available during summer months and is free to members of College. Bookings can be made up to a week in advance for a two hour slot. Bookings should be made through the Lodge.

Full terms and conditions are emailed to College members at the start of each summer and are available on request from the Lodge.
